(Topeka, Kansas) – This afternoon Central National Bank presented a check for $5,000 to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas to support the Kansas Loan Pool Project (KLPP) in the Topeka area. The program is designed to help individuals get out from under the cloud of Payday Lenders. It has been successful in the Kansas City area, and Catholic Charities is seeking financial support from local banks and businesses to help advance the program here in Topeka.
“It’s great that we’re able to support local initiatives that aim to improve the, sometimes, dire financial situations that residents find themselves in, ” said Sara Girard, President of Central National Bank. “We already try to educate customers and non-customers about how they can work to improve credit and financial standing; and that’s why we offer products like our New Opportunity Checking account, which is designed specifically for individuals seeking a clean slate with banking so they can regain their financial strength. When the opportunity arose to support something that can provide extra assistance to residents struggling here in Topeka, we knew we had to help.”
Recognizing that predatory lending such as payday and title loans contributes to the hardships of our neighbors in need, Catholic Charities created the KLPP program to help eliminate high-interest title or payday loans by issuing participants a new, low-interest loan. Each participant is enrolled in a financial education series to help develop a long-term financial plan and budget. They are also assigned a Catholic Charities case manager specialist to provide ongoing monthly support. “We’re encouraged by the support we’ve received,” says Amelia Reyes, Catholic Charities’ Director of Asset Development. “We’re excited to start helping those in Topeka who are being taken advantage of with these types of high-interest loans, reduce their debt.”
