The Catherin V. Merrill Foundation offers a summer internship program for college students who are Catholic and want to serve people who are in need in our community.

Twenty full-time positions are available this summer at nonprofit organizations throughout the Kansas City area. Students are compensated $20 per hour. As requested by the Catherin V. Merrill Foundation, this program is for Catholic college students.

Last summer Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas welcomed 10 interns thanks to the Catholic Summer Internship Kansas City (CSIKC) program.

Application Process

Submit an online application.

Ask for a letter of recommendation from your pastor, parish staff, campus minister or a teacher. The letter should be sent directly to: [email protected].

Through this internship, we hope for you to:
  • Gain experience serving individuals who struggle economically

  • Learn about the causes and possible solutions to poverty

  • Make a personal connection between your experiences and faith

  • Gain professional experience

  • Discern your future education and career path

Program Requirements
  • Work at your organization from May 18-July 24, 2026

  • Write weekly reflection papers

  • Attend periodic meetings and two scheduled Masses with other interns

  • Allowed to take up to 5 days off (unpaid)

  • Preference is given to applicants who are: new to this program; passionate about service; college seniors, followed by juniors and then sophomores

Your internship at a local non-profit will be from May 18-July 24, 2026.

Each week you must write a one or two page reflection about some experience you had during the week and what you think God’s message was through that experience. Or, you can look at the readings from the Sundays that bookend that week to see if there is a message that connects to an experience you had that week. On this website you can click on “Interns Weekly Reflections” to read what some of last year’s interns wrote.

You can take up to 5 unpaid days off during the summer. Also, your organization may have holidays off that are also unpaid.

Yes, there will be an initial orientation and during the internship we will meet twice for lunch, discussion and Mass. During the last week of the internship we will have a concluding dinner with the trustees of the Merrill Foundation. All of these will meals, meetings and Mass will take place at Rockhurst University.

You will be paid twice a month by direct deposit.
