Warehouse and Food Pantry
Central Warehouse for 21 Counties

Hope Distribution Center (HDC) serves as the central location for food distribution to our Family Support Center food pantries and 21 counties served by Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.

The HDC warehouse helps us ensure a balanced inventory for the food pantries in our Family Support Centers. Its spaciousness allows us to accept U.S.D.A. commodities and other large-scale donations which require dock access. The warehouse also features a large walk-in freezer to store meat and other fresh items.

Hope Distribution Center is also home to a food pantry and is our only food pantry that is not housed in a full Family Support Center.

History

If Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas was going to meet the growing need for food throughout the 21 counties, a large warehouse space was needed that would provide easy access to trucks for large scale food donations and delivery. Dressler Pet Supply was for sale, which featured three dock doors, two drive-in bays and a 1100 square foot stone building that could serve as a walk-in food pantry. In a matter of minutes, St. Michael the Archangel parish raised funds to purchase the building.

For seven straight Saturdays over 130 volunteers, including neighbors and parish members, put love into action donating 600 hours of service to renovate and remodel the building for food storage. Their labor of love paid off when, on August 14, 2014, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas opened the Hope Distribution Center (HDC). Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann and the CEO of Harvesters and Mayor of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The first large delivery of food came from St. Thomas Aquinas high school’s annual food drive.

The new food warehouse was critical to the expansion of services, especially to the rural communities. Catholic Charities was able to nearly triple its capability for food distribution to 300,000 pounds per month. In 2015, the food pantry adjacent to the warehouse, was the first location to offer a “client choice” model. Set-up like a mini-market, those we serve have the opportunity to select items appropriate for their families’ dietary and cultural needs.

  • We rely on the generosity of volunteer-driven food drives, gifts-in-kind, as well as financial contributions to help us keep our warehouse shelves stocked to meet the growing needs of individuals and families throughout our service area. We also appreciate volunteer support to help us sort the donated food.
