AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides opportunities for individuals across the U.S. to serve their local communities. Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas proudly hosts this program for young volunteers who are passionate about giving back.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members work alongside Catholic Charities staff and volunteers to provide services including poverty reduction, community outreach, social justice and other areas of focus within our agency.
Catholic Charities AmeriCorps members receive extensive training and professional development opportunities that enhance work skills and knowledge. They are also provided an opportunity to build relationships with our staff, clients, volunteers and community partners, which in turn fosters a collaborative environment and taps into networking potential to boost professional development. Additionally, members receive a living allowance, health benefits and an education award upon completion.
“I work in the Refugee & Immigration Services department at Catholic Charities and help enroll refugee arrivals in English language courses. I love that I get to work with such a variety of people. I have met people from diverse backgrounds (both Catholic Charities staff and clients) and everyone has been so welcoming. That is what the AmeriCorps program is about, welcoming others and working to alleviate poverty,” said Ashley Hagan, Refugee Learning Center VISTA.
