Food Equality Initiative, a nonprofit focused on nutrition security and health equity, conducted a listening session for those we serve in the Overland Park area last month. The session was intended to gain valuable insights about food access and the gaps or barriers individuals in need face in finding food that aligns with their health needs. Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas’ clients gathered to share their experiences, expressing challenges such as limited income, lack of transportation, insufficient access to affordable, nutritious foods at local stores or food pantries and minimal knowledge or awareness of nutritional food available.
“Food equality is more than just having enough to eat; it’s ensuring everyone has access to the specific foods they need for their health and dietary needs,” said Nelson Vowels, Senior Director of Mission Operations. “We must understand the levels of food insecurity that our client or prospective client populations face. Understanding this better will help us ensure that the food we offer at our food pantries encompasses a broad set of food needs and health concerns,” he added.
Catholic Charities intends to partner with the Food Equality Initiative to further education in the nutritional needs of our client community.
