Hi, my name is Garry and this is my hope story…
I am a recovering alcoholic and I have had a long series of health issues including pancreatitis that almost took my life. When I finally recovered, I was told I would have diabetes permanently.
After that diagnosis, I developed prostate cancer and had to have my prostate removed. Unfortunately, I was denied disability benefits so I had to continue working even though it is a hardship for me physically. I ended up without a home and had to move in with my sister.
I started working with a temporary employment agency and making a fairly steady income. Fearing I’d be a burden to my sister, I strived to live independently again. I decided to go to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas for housing assistance. My case manager was able to help me find affordable housing. I was able to save the money for the first month’s rent but did not have enough for the deposit, so Catholic Charities helped with the deposit.
Getting into my own apartment, working at a steady job, and shopping at Catholic Charities’ pantry for healthier food has made my sense of hope for the future, as well as my self-esteem, skyrocket. I will soon be able to afford my own scooter to get to work!
