Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas was humbled by the support of our community late last month! On Saturday, May 31st, Catholic Charities supporters attended the Fresh Start Food Drive. Nearly 4,000 pounds and $6,000 worth of fresh fruit and produce items greatly needed by our food pantries were donated by attendees, and all had the opportunity to meet our new Archbishop, the Most Reverend Shawn McKnight, S,Th.D.

“One in five children are going hungry in our Kansas community. The need for food security is only growing,” shared Lauren Solidum, President & CEO of Catholic Charities. “We were so impressed by the amazing generosity of our Archdiocese in helping us feed the most vulnerable among us,” she added.

During the summer months, our food pantries experience a decrease in donations, something we refer to as a “summer food drought.” Families who rely on reduced-cost lunches during the school year, or families who may be feeling extra financial burden due to ever–increasing grocery costs begin to frequent our food pantries. Receiving food from a food pantry can help a family be able to augment their budget so they can pay their utility bill or rent.

“Food is a basic human need. We are always going to provide that if someone is in need,” said Denise Ogilvie, Chief Mission Integration Officer. “Stepping through the doors of our food pantry is also much more than just food on a table, it is an entry to Catholic Charities’ life-changing programs like housing, financial literacy, Workforce and job-skills training programs.”

We are extremely grateful for the generosity we received from this event, and honored to have partnered with the new Archbishop in serving our community! Thank you for being our Hope Heroes!
