Parishes and community partners showed their love for the kids in our community with back-to-school drives to benefit those served by Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. This year, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Shawnee, donated 120 completely filled backpacks for students in grades K-5 at New Chelsea Elementary, Kansas City, Kansas. Additionally, they donated $1,015 worth of bulk supplies for the classroom (including Kleenex, Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer).
“Many families are striving just to make ends meet to cover the basics of living. The cost of school supplies can make a significant dent in their personal budgets,” says Camille Pickhinke, Parish and Community Outreach Coordinator.
Parishioners at St. John Paul II, Olathe, also chipped in 60 backpacks and school supplies which were distributed in our rural communities that we serve through our Mobile Resource Bus. In Leavenworth, the passionate volunteers at our Family Support Center (FSC) helped 230 kids in grades K-12 walk away ready for school with a new backpack, school supplies and a jacket.
“We are extremely grateful for our partnerships with our parishes, schools and community partners,” adds Camille. “They never fail us in helping meet the needs of those we serve. Their constant love and generosity for our neighbors in need – especially the kids in our community – is incredible.”
