Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas’ Pregnancy Support Services Program offers more than resources for women and growing families. Education, healthcare advocacy, physical baby items and emotional support are all provided to those enrolled in the program. “Our program is very client-centered; we want to give education to every expectant parent we serve,” said Heather Roberts, Director of Adoption & Pregnancy Support Services.
Program case managers help women make informed decisions about their futures and provide education on a range of topics, including prenatal care, parenting and the option of adoption. Program staff also help women connect and apply to Medicaid, WIC, food stamps and/or Happy Bottoms. Material assistance is also given in the form of diapers, car seats, pack and plays and other baby essentials. Most importantly, the program provides clients with emotional support as they begin their parenting journey.
The program is open and inclusive to all; there is no age, ethnicity or income eligibility requirement to enroll. Clients are currently served in Johnson and Wyandotte County and services have recently begun in Leavenworth with a plan to expand in Lawrence.
“Our clients face challenges such as medical care, finding childcare once their baby is born or not having enough funds postpartum. Many women do not have access to short term disability or do not qualify for benefits that allow them to heal and recover post-pregnancy,” Roberts added. “We support people where they’re at, and what they’re needing in their journey.”
