Basic computer skills may seem commonplace in today’s ever-connected world, but for a refugee, digital practices must be learned. That’s where Digital Inclusion comes in. Offered through our Refugee Learning Center, Digital Inclusion addresses refugees’ digital access needs, helping them gain the knowledge and confidence to navigate life in their new country.
In addition to case management services, Digital Inclusion provides a comprehensive educational program consisting of three pillars: access, connectivity and literacy. Access is focused on providing refugees the tools and tech equipment they need. Connectivity enables access to internet via a free hotspot available at the Learning Center. Finally, literacy is put into action via a class curriculum utilizing images instead of words.
Staff and volunteers have been instrumental to the program’s success – leading classes, developing curriculum and serving as mentors. Since the program’s launch in 2022, 55 students have been served and 35 computers have been donated. After exiting the program, many students have expressed newfound dreams and opportunities.
“There are many unique challenges refugees face. It’s nice to see these individuals begin to express hope for their own futures and careers,” said Pam Rooks, Refugee Digital Access Coordinator.
