We are looking for volunteers for our VITA program!

Please note that most of these positions do not require any previous experience.

Greeter:

  • Must complete the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification.
  • Greet all taxpayers visiting the site to create a pleasant atmosphere.
  • Confirm that the taxpayer is checked-in.
  • Provide the taxpayer with an Intake Form and answer any non-tax questions.
  • Manage waiting and entry areas to maintain socially distanced flow of taxpayers according to site operating procedures.
  • Contact scheduled clients/taxpayers to confirm appointments if necessary.
  • Adhere to Quality Site Requirements and Volunteer Standard of Conduct at all times.

Intake Specialist:

  • Must complete the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification and the Intake/Interview & Quality Certification.
  • Confirm that the taxpayer has brought all required documents to verify taxpayer identity and complete tax return.
  • Explain the tax preparation process to the taxpayer and obtain consent on Form 14446 for remote preparation of tax return.
  • Make sure that taxpayer’s Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet is properly completed based on information the taxpayer provides. Ask follow-up questions to clarify any unclear circumstances and information when necessary.
  • Determine if the return is within the scope of the VITA program.
  • Refer taxpayers to get help at the appropriate local offices and organizations if their returns are outside the scope for VITA.
  • Make copies of all necessary documents to prepare the tax return and create a secure/unique folder for each taxpayer. Securely store the folder for tax preparation.
  • Adhere to Quality Site Requirements and Volunteer Standard of Conduct at all times.

Tax Preparer:

  • Must complete the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification, the Intake/Interview & Quality Certification, and Tax preparation certification at the Advanced Level.
  • Prepare only returns that are within the scope of the VITA program.
  • Prepare accurate federal and state tax returns for qualified taxpayers only based on information provided by the taxpayer contained in the taxpayer folder.
  • Securely call and discuss with the taxpayer for any clarifications on the documents provided.
  • (Optional) Review the quality reviewed prepared return with the taxpayer during the return appointment; Obtain taxpayers consent to e-file on Form 8879.
  • Enter tax information into TaxSlayer software.
  • Adhere to Quality Site Requirements and Volunteer Standard of Conduct at all times.

Quality Reviewer:

  • Must complete the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification, the Intake/Interview & Quality Certification, and Tax preparation certification at the Advanced Level. Must have at least one season of tax preparation experience.
  • Review returns prepared by tax preparers for accuracy and completeness to fulfill quality standards.
  • Provide feedback regarding common errors made on tax returns prepared at the site for future quality improvements.
  • Serve as a back-up to tax preparers and prepares tax returns when needed.
  • (Optional) Review the quality reviewed prepared return with the taxpayer during the return appointment; Obtain taxpayers consent to e-file on Form 8879.
  • Assist the site coordinator in answering tax-related questions during service hours.
  • Adhere to Quality Site Requirements and Volunteer Standard of Conduct at all times.

Site Coordinator:

  • Must complete the IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification, the Intake/Interview & Quality Certification, Tax preparation certification at the Advanced Level, and the Site Coordinator Certification.
  • Supervise all VITA services at designated site, guiding preparers to best serve the client population.
  • Ensure all aspects of VITA site programming is being executed in compliance with IRS regulation.
  • Serve as a back-up to tax preparers and prepares tax returns when needed.
  • Adhere to Quality Site Requirements and Volunteer Standard of Conduct at all times.
