(Overland Park, KS) – Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas was awarded a $13,000 grant to increase awareness and assist eligible individuals and families, including seniors, with enrollment in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The grant, which is part of a nationwide effort to address hunger, was provided by Catholic Charities USA and funded by the Walmart Foundation.

Catholic Charities will conduct SNAP enrollment activities in 24 sites throughout its 21-county service area. These sites include the agency’s seven Family Support Centers, 15 counties served by two mobile resource buses and the Refugee and Foster Grandparents programs.

“Our efforts target low-income communities, especially those that have experienced food insecurity. In our service area, over 12% of residents have experienced food insecurity, and 67% of those we serve at our seven Family Support Centers arrive primarily for food assistance,” says Denise Ogilvie, Vice President, Community Engagement, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. “There is, therefore, a great need for the support offered by SNAP Outreach and Enrollment program.”

Thanks to the grant, Catholic Charities has helped 50 individuals this last quarter apply for the benefit, which provides greater access to better nutritional and health food choices.
