“We serve our neighbors, of all faiths, through Help, Hope and Hospitality” is the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. Last month, another religious organization joined us in our mission.

On March 1, we received an immensely generous donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They shipped approximately 40,000 pounds of shelf-stable commodities on 24 pallets to our primary food warehouse, Hope Distribution Center (HDC).

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints annually donates 57.3 million pounds of food to select non-profits. Most of the donated food is produced through their 12 farms, three gardens, three ranches and four orchards, then processed at Deseret Mill and Pasta plant and Church canneries.

“For many years, Catholic Charities divisions across the United States have been working in tandem with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to lift the most vulnerable populations in a variety of ways. When the opportunity was presented through mutual contacts to work with Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, the need to support food insecurity was identified as a meaningful way to have immediate impact,” said Cindy McDavitt, Communications Director, Kansas City Area at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since 2022, Catholic Charities has been facing a food drought and has struggled to keep all food pantries entirely stocked. This bountiful donation will ensure that our eight food pantries and Resource Bus will continue to serve those in need.
