Volunteer Job Title: English Outreach Tutor

Length of Commitment: 3-6 months

Weekly Hrs.:2-3 Hours

Location: Virtual and In-Person

 

Position Summary

English Outreach Tutors provide English learning opportunities to refugee adults who are unable to attend traditional English classes due to work schedules, transportation barriers, or other life commitments. This volunteer role offers flexible scheduling and can take place in a variety of agreed-upon locations. Tutors are supported through training and resources to help create a simple and effective learning plan for their student.

 

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Meet with a refugee student for English tutoring on a consistent weekly schedule
  • Provide basic English instruction focused on conversation, reading, writing, and everyday life skills
  • Prepare simple lessons or activities that match the student’s needs and goals
  • Encourage and support the student’s confidence and progress over time
  • Communicate with program staff as needed for guidance, resources, or support

 

Qualifications

  • Reliable and consistent attendance for weekly tutoring sessions
  • Patience, encouragement, and willingness to build trust with a student
  • Comfortable working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds
  • No formal teaching experience required

 

Training and Support

  • Training is provided by staff members to help volunteers feel confident in their role, including guidance for building a curriculum and selecting appropriate learning activities and materials.

 

Time Commitment:
2-3 Hours per week for 3-6 Months
