From feeding underprivileged children to caring for and supporting families that are experiencing homelessness, all ministries at Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas value the dignity of human life. One specific program we offer especially cherishes the gift of new life, the Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative (PMI).
PMI supports the value of both women and children throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond by increasing education and aid to mothers that are expecting and/or parenting their child. Program services cover medical, financial, and emotional counsel.
“We meet with ladies who are exploring adoption, parenting, and abortion. This program is for women that want to explore their options and have loving support along the way. We want to make sure that all ladies have access to medical care and can become their own health advocates.”
— Heather Roberts, LMSW, Manager of Adoption and Pregnancy Counseling
Case managers help women apply for Medicaid, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Nutrition Program, and HappyBottoms™ (Catholic Charities’ partner program that works to alleviate diaper needs in the KC area). Women also receive referrals to community resources for assistance with rent, utilities, food, Parents as Teachers, legal services, and many other health and financial services and aids. In addition, ladies receive baby items and essentials such as diapers, clothing, blankets, and bottles that are donated from our generous community. If training is completed, pack ‘n plays or car seats may be provided.
PMI has no age or income requirements and extends up until a child is six months of age. The goal of the program is to meet with an individual once per month, or more if they are in crisis or need extra assistance. Translators are available when needed.
