On a cold winter’s night in 1974, a group of inspired friends gathered over a potluck dinner with a single goal in mind – to help families served by Catholic Charities Foundation of Northeast Kansas. That night “snowballed” and became a spectacular annual fundraising event to provide for the most vulnerable in the community. On January 20, 2024, Catholic Charities Foundation of Northeast Kansas will celebrate an incredible milestone – the 50th anniversary of Snow Ball, which will be held at the Overland Park Convention Center.
Peter and Veronica Mallouk, who are serving as the Snow Ball Presidents for this historic event, will be joined by Honorary Presidents, Jack and Kathy Newman. Over 2,000 supporters are expected to attend, including many who have made it a family tradition with second, third and even fourth generations coming together in support of the work of Catholic Charities.
The black-tie gala will feature a cocktail reception, sit-down dinner and dancing to the acclaimed Emerald City Band. Unlike most charitable events, there is no financial ask the night of Snow Ball. All funds are raised prior to the evening. “The 50th Annual Snow Ball will truly be an epic celebration of gratitude, love and life-changing hope,” says Lauren Solidum, President and CEO, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.
Snow Ball has become one of the largest charitable events in the Kansas City area, raising a record breaking $4 million last year. In total, the event has brought in more than $50 million over the last 50 years, with $0.90 of every dollar directly impacting individuals and families served by Catholic Charities’ 30+ programs throughout 21 counties in Northeast Kansas.
Snow Ball’s golden anniversary will serve as an opportunity to honor the legacy of love built over decades by generous supporters committed to advancing Catholic Charities’ mission of providing help, hope and hospitality to people of all faiths who need it most. It will also be cause for a celebration of a future of hope that lies ahead.
“Whether through food assistance, housing, education or employment services,” said Solidum, “generous donations to Snow Ball will continue to have an immeasurable effect on Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas’ ability to grow the programs and services that are so desperately needed in our community to walk our neighbors out of poverty.”
