Local Produce Grown by Kansas City Farmers
New Roots is a training program that empowers refugees, immigrants and English Language Learner farmers to develop sustainable businesses.
The collaboration between Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and Cultivate KC helps individuals with an agricultural background in their home countries adapt to Kansas City climate and culture while supporting their families.
Our trainee and graduate farmers use organic principles and sell their produce to local restaurants, at farmers markets and through Farm Share subscriptions.

Empowering Refugees, Immigrants & English Language Learners

New Roots Farm Share 2024 subscriptions are open!
What is New Roots Farm Share, you ask?
It`s a weekly subscription service that allows customers to buy produce DIRECTLY from New Roots growers.
Shares include a seasonal blend of veggies we`ve all been dreaming of since the first frost back in October: lettuce mix, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, scallions, oh my!
You`ll also find products that are less familiar to Americans, but which are community staples among New Roots farmers: chin baung, mchicha, isogo, water spinach, and more.
How does it work?
Every week throughout the summer, customers pick up their share from one of four conveniently located sites throughout the metro.
How long does it run for?
There are three subscription options to suit your family`s budget and busy summer schedule. They are:
1) If you want your fridge fully stocked with veg from May through October, purchase a ***Full Summer Share.***
2) If you plan to pull up stakes and start a new life in the south of France around August, the ***Early Summer Farm Share*** is for you. It starts in May and ends around mid-July.
3) If you`re returning at the end of July from years abroad in the south of France, but a little worried about readjusting your pampered palate, the ***Late Summer Farm Share*** is a great way to keep your diet world class. It runs from late July through October.
Reserve your spot today for next season`s Farm Share, weekly installments of fresh, versatile produce grown locally by New Roots farmers-in-training.

Lights! Camera! Action! New Roots is partner on a grant with training farms around the country to create plain language educational materials for refugee and immigrant farmers. These tools are meant to be understood by anyone learning how to run a farm, even if they experience a language barrier.
The great thing about working with veggie-models is you get to eat them afterwards!
Just kidding, for legal reasons we need to assure you that all of the vegetables featured in these photos were fairly compensated in accordance with their contracts.

Remember when New Roots broke ground on the new Diana Eisman Community Greenhouse at Stowe this summer? Well @CultivateKC staff have spent the fall making good progress on the new 6,000 square foot space.
The greenhouse is being built to support the growing demand from urban farmers in the KCK area who need space to start transplants in the spring and fall. New Roots farmers and graduates will receive priority to rent bench space inside the house, but the vast size will allow many other professional and hobbyist farmers to utilize the space.
Check out the link in our bio to follow progress and learn more about the Diana Eisman Community Greenhouse on Cultivate KC`s website!

Once a month, New Roots staff meets for a potluck and discussion. The discussion usually is based around an article or video related to the work we do at Juniper Gardens Training Farm, ranging from principles of adult education, to racial justice and food sovereignty, to branding and marketing farm products, you name it.
There was a definite Thanksgiving theme to the dishes this week-- green bean casserole, rotisserie chicken, fennel salad, and a bunch of desert that didn`t stick around long enough for a picture.

English for Farming has begun!
New Roots farmers meet in the off-season to practice vocab and conversation skills that would be useful around the farm or interacting with customers. It`s also a good time for new farmers to meet and get to know the other folks in the program before farm classes begin in February.
