Practical Skills for Daily Living
The Refugee Learning Center is a place where newly arrived refugees come to learn critical skills that will assist them on their path to self-sufficiency. The Learning Center offers courses on English Language Learning (ELL), Cultural Orientation, and Job Readiness training. The multilevel ELL program allows students to practice practical English skills to assist with daily life in their new homeland. Students facing barriers in attending ELL classes in the Learning Center may enroll in the Community ESL tutor program, a one-on-one tutoring program that takes place in the student’s home.
Cultural Orientation classes give students an opportunity to learn about starting a new life in the US. The curriculum covers topics such as housing, the resettlement agency, financial literacy, employment, health care, English and Education, Transportation, Hygiene and Wellness, US Laws and Community Safety, and Cultural Adjustment. Student may also enroll in Job Readiness classes that prepare new arrivals for work in the United States. Students practice filling out job descriptions, take part in mock interviews, and discuss workplace norms. Classes also engage in community building by volunteering with other local nonprofits in the KC metro area.
