Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas established La Luz Center for Immigration Legal Assistance in 2010. This center provides professional immigration legal services to low-income, foreign-born individuals and their families for little to no cost. It is staffed by a bilingual (Spanish/English), experienced immigration attorney and a bilingual Board of Immigration (BIA) Accredited Representative, who offer vital legal assistance on non-business immigration matters.
For refugees fleeing persecution, legal assistance often means the difference between life and death. It reunites families separated by many years and thousands of miles; it secures permission to work in the United States enabling immigrants to support themselves and their families; it allows individuals to seek help from the police, doctors, and school officials without fear of removal; and it provides a reliable source of legal information, advice and representation from a highly trained and experienced professional staff.
We provide affordable and pro bono legal counseling and representation for a wide-range of immigration matters. We work with refugees and immigrants in need of representation for matters including:
- Family-Based petitions
- Adjustment of Status applications
- Consideration for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
- Renewal/Replacement of Permanent Resident Card
- Self-petitions for battered spouses and children
- Applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
- U Visas
- Fiancé Visa
- Travel Documents
- Remove Conditions on Residence
- Referrals as appropriate
We also assist undocumented immigrants who have no legal options by making them aware of their legal rights. This information empowers them to avoid fraudulent and predatory offers of work permits for large amounts of money.
